Funeral services for James Haven Howard, 81, of Lamesa will be held Friday, August 17, 2018 at 10:00 a.m. at Second Baptist Church with Roy Byrd officiating. Interment will follow in Dawson County Cemetery under the direction of Branon Funeral Home. Visitation will be held Thursday, August 16, 2018 from 6:00-7:00 p.m. James passed away Tuesday, August 14, 2018 in Midland.
He was born August 3, 1937 in Morgan Mill, TX to Thomas Lavan and Geneva (Bean) Howard. He married Joye Nichols October 5, 1958. They were married 59 years. James was a rancher and farmed in Dawson, Martin, and Howard Counties. He was a very hard worker and ran cows on the Coleman Ranch in Borden County as well. He played on the Dawson County Cowboy Polo Team ending career as three-time world champions with his brothers, Junior, Troy, and friends.
James is survived by his wife Joye Howard of Lamesa; children, Kathy Drennan and husband, Gordon of Pocahontas, AR, and Carol Holcomb and husband, Mike of Lamesa; sister, JoAnn Ritchey of Big Spring; brother, Troy Howard and wife, Sue of Lamesa; grandchildren, Jessica Thomas and husband, Kurt of Wolforth, Jamie Crockett and husband, Zac of Welch, Mackenzie Holcomb of Lamesa, and Haydon Holcomb of Lamesa; and great-grandchildren, Jayden Makay Holcomb, Kynlee Mae Thomas, Kaydee Rhae Thomas, Brogan Rayne Crockett, and Remi James Crockett. He is preceded in death by his parents; brother, Junior Howard; and brother-in-law, Donald Ritchey.
