Dr. Raymond Thomas Holzbach
August 19, 1929 - January 19, 2024
*Obituary
Dr. Raymond Thomas Holzbach, known to his friends and family as Tom, passed away on January 19, 2024, in Austin, Texas at the age of 94. He was born on August 19, 1929, in Salem, Ohio. Tom was a beloved father, grandfather, and companion. He dedicated his life to advancing medical research, especially in the field of gastroenterology.
Tom is survived by his loving partner, Mary Kevorkian of Westminster Manor; his daughter, Ellen Holbrook of Berkeley, California; his sons, Mark Holzbach of Austin, Texas, and James Holzbach of San Antonio, Texas. He was a proud grandfather to Alex Holzbach and Andrew Holzbach who are currently enrolled at Rice University in Houston, Texas. He was preceded in death by his late wife, Lorraine Cozza Holzbach, of Cleveland, Ohio.
During his long and distinguished career, Tom’s work earned him numerous accolades, awards, honors, international visiting professorships, and lectureships (in the US, Europe, New Zealand, and Japan). His grant-supported work at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation, exemplified his commitment to advancing medical research and patient care and resulted in hundreds of published papers, abstracts, and presentations. Tom also served as Medical Service Captain and Chief in the U.S. Air Force in Idaho at Mountain Home Air Force Base Hospital from 1957-1959, and with the U.S. Air Force Reserves through 1962.
In addition to his professional achievements, Tom had passions for various hobbies including golf, skiing, hiking, world history, keeping current on events with newspapers, and reading his beloved The Economist. Tom devoted years to researching his family history spanning generations and continents, resulting in an impressive “Blue Book” publication that he disseminated to relatives in the US, Europe, and even South America. His devotion to his family, and his enthusiasm for sharing knowledge, were evident to all who knew him. While residing at Westminster Manor since 2011, Tom and his partner Mary were avid music-loving concert-goers, and domestic and international travelers, together enjoying 15 years of exploration and adventure, sometimes with other family members. Their travels brought joy and enriched their lives immeasurably.
The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to his doctors including his final attending physician Dr. Michael Pelligrini, all his caregivers including Westminster skilled nursing staff, Hospice Austin staff, Halcyon staff, and the remarkably multi-talented and devoted staff at Westminster Manor for their unwavering support and care in his final years.
A Memorial Service to celebrate Tom remarkable life will be held at Westminster Manor's Harris Bell Hall at 2:30 PM on Saturday, January 27, 2024 (4100 Jackson Ave, Austin, TX 78731). Friends, colleagues, and those whose lives were touched by Tom are invited to join in commemorating his memory.
In memory of Tom, and in lieu of flowers, the family suggests that donations be made to the following 501(c)3 charities: the Westminster Manor Residents Association’s “Resident Appreciation Fund” in gratitude for the talent and efforts of the wonderful Westminster staff, and also to Conspirare, Inc music group, a constant source of comfort and joy.
Tom’s passing marks a significant loss to the medical community and all who knew him. His legacy of kindness, dedication, and impactful work will continue to inspire for generations to come.
