Glenn Roy Currie age 68, of Round Rock, Texas died in his place of residence January 11, 2024 of natural causes.
Glenn was a graduate of Victoria High School and received a Computer Science degree from the University of Texas at Austin. Glenn grew up participating in scouts and was part of the Dakota Indian Dance Society in Victoria. While in college, Glenn worked for the McDonald Observatory and was on the team that developed the Guide Star Selection System for the Hubble Telescope. Glenn also did image processing in support of the Outer Planet Satellite project (Pioneer and Voyager probes). After college, he worked for Tandem computers on projects including developing diagnostics for the first fault tolerant Unix computer. Later, he was the team lead in developing the remote diagnostic system for the first fault tolerant computer running the “CTRON” operating system for NTT, the phone company of Japan.
Glenn continued innovative work with various companies on many types of electronic devices and operating systems. He worked at all levels on various projects. When building prototypes, he employed his welding, woodworking and machining of plastics to bring new creations to life.
Glenn was a founding member and on the board of directors for The Robot Group, Inc. in Austin, Texas (“The Robot Group, Inc.” on facebook). Reports of the group's various projects may be found in print media as well as television.
He was also very active in the ham radio community, call KD5MFW, working with emergency communications. He saw the need for a better communication system during emergencies. This prompted Glenn to lead a team to create the trademarked, award winning system called Broadband-Hamnet , a wireless computer network that is designed, developed and deployed as an amateur radio broadband communication system. It can run for days off of a car battery. It allows live communications both audio and visual. This system has now spread across the United States and many other countries around the world.
Glenn never married. Instead he chose to dedicate his life to projects he believed would make the world a better place. He was successful.
Glenn is survived by his siblings, Phil Ray Currie, Patty Lyn Currie Romo and Annette Kay Currie Markovich. His nephews and nieces include Shawn Currie, Tiffany Currie, Afton Currie, Falyn Currie, Cristian Romo, Alexis Romo, Vivian Romo, Ashley Daniels, Jillann Morse and Ryan Daniels. He is preceded in death by his parents, Job Henry Currie and Catherine Janet Pyle Currie.
Burial will be held at 10:00 A.M., April 20, 2024 at the Locker Cemetery near Richland Springs, Texas. A public “Celebration of Life” memorial will be held April 21 in Round Rock, Texas at the Lake Creek Pavillion, 800 Deerfoot Drive 3:00-6:00 P.M.
