Louis Fridel, known as Al to friends and family, passed peacefully in his sleep at his home in Cedar Park, Texas on July 25, 2024 at the age of 89.
Al was born to Agnes and Louis Fridel in 1935. He enjoyed fishing in the Brazos River and sang in his Catholic School choir. Upon graduation from High School, he served three-years in the United States Army, then 20-years in the United States Air Force. Service in the Armed Forces and a 20-year career in telecommunications took him and his family to many corners of the globe including England, Turkey, Washington D.C., and other US cities. In his telecommunications career, Al managed the networking/cabling of the Panama Canal, and the Time Life building in New York. Serving in the church and community were important and ever present in Al’s life. He volunteered for the Boy Scouts, served as Elder in the Lutheran Church, and led an active vibrant life at his independent living community in Cedar Park. He even returned to singing with his community Choral Group.
Jan, best friend and dearly beloved wife of 51-years preceded Al in death. Jan caught his eye with her red hair and red dress at the La Bahia Dance Hall in October 1957, and a lifelong romance began. Their strong love and dedication for each other was evident in all they did during their life together. After his military service, Al and family settled in Plano, Texas. While there, he enjoyed following the Dallas Cowboys, Texas Rangers and golfing activities including annual volunteer work at the Byron Nelson Golf Tournament. Retirement took Al and Jan to South and Central, Texas. Al’s intelligence, common sense, Christianity, and love of country set the moral compass for his life. These traits were passed down by him through the generations.
Louis “Al” Fridel is survived by his children, daughter Kathie and husband Chris of Austin, son Greg and wife Gwen of Cedar Park, daughter Kim and husband David of Castle Rock, Colorado; grandchildren, Jennifer, Seth, Gilbert and Gray; great grandchildren, Jaxon and Alayna. Al was preceded in death by sister Patricia and sister-in-law Carol. He is survived by brothers-in-law, Malcolm of Bryan, Weldon of La Grange, James and wife Ruth of Ellinger; sisters-in-law, Mary and husband Erland of Burnet, Debbie and husband DuWayne of Harper.
