John Eldrue 'Scooter" Childress, died suddenly and unexpectedly in Austin, Texas on December 23, 2011 at the age of 58.
He was born on August 3, 1953, in Memphis, Texas, to Jack and Louise Parker Childress. He spent his formative years in Lubbock, moving with his family to Dallas in 1967. He played football and baseball for the Skyline High School Raiders and graduated in 1973. He worked hard and played fair all his life, coaching pewee football, and volunteering as an umpire for youth baseball and softball. He mastered many facets of construction, and was particularly recognized for his expertise in commercial metal roofing, carports, awnings and walkway covers, specializing in on-site collaborative design. He was especially proud of his work on the parking area for Meals on Wheels, Austin.
He is survived by his beloved daughter, April Childress, currently residing in Colorado, by his brother, Charles Childress of Austin, Texas and by his sister, Aminah Subedar of Murphy, Texas. As John saw it, his family included the children and grandchildren of his siblings and all the close friends he cherished in Lubbock, Dallas and Austin. The world will not be the same, and certainly not as bright or as interesting, without him.
