Dr. James H. Martin was a man of many talents. His unique education included degrees in biology and industrial arts. He came to Baylor Hospital in 1962 as an electrician in the engineering department. Not long after, he was transferred to Pathology to work in the newly formed electron microscope lab. His know ledge of biology and electronics was well suited to the demands of this relatively new technology. Encouraged by Dr. George Race, Jim furthered his education by earning both Masters and Doctoral degrees from the Baylor College of Dentistry. Eventually, he became the department head for his lab. During these early years of discovering the usefulness of electron microscope diagnosis of diseases, Jim was instrumental in initiating research protocols that would lead to hundreds of publications in scientific journals. The electron microscope lab became known worldwide in the medical community as one of the leading research facilities in the U.S. Jim also co-authored a text book that was used in medical and dental schools, and contributed to several pathology books. Jim encouraged his staff to pursue more education to improve themselves and the quality of work produced by the electron microscopy department at Baylor. During his 29 years at Baylor Hospital, many doctors, scientists and technologist; came to the EM lab for training and research. These visitors to the EM lab came from not only the U.S., but also from overseas. Survivors include daughters, Kim Martin Arrington; Dr. Kara Martin; son, Mike Martin; brother, Glenn Martin; sister Patsy Collins; and four grandchildren. Funeral services were held Wednesday, November 26. 2003 at First United Methodist Church Chapel in Irving. Interment was held at Warthan Cemetery in Annona, Texas.
