CEMETERY OF
BETHEL SCHOOL COMMUNITY
-- EST. 1877 --

According to the Deed Records of Erath County, Texas, the property on which this cemetery is situated was deeded from W.T. and Martha Mowery on December 6, 1877, to the Trustees of Bethel School Community to be used for a school and church premises. The deed lists the sales price of Five Dollars for four acres, amounting to $1.25 per acre.
The four acre tract is described as one acre broad and four acres long, measured in yards of 70 x 280.
Survey made of adjoining properties using modern techniques of survey measurements, and using the corners of the cemetery as reference points, it is believed that the cemetery is located along the south side and in the western portion of the four acre tract.
Modern measurements of the cemetery in metes (distance of feet) and in angles and compass directions in degrees (bounds) indicates as follows: The cemetery is
* approximately 137.6 ft. wide on the west side;
* approximately 133.9 ft. wide on the east side; and
* approximately 206.4 ft. long on the north and south sides.
A glimpse of life in the late 1800's is documented in a manuscript written by John Wesley Oliver which includes a little information about life in the Huckabay and Bethel communities of the era. The manuscript is on file at the Huckabay School Library.
