August was the oldest son of Valentine & Elizabeth Hoch. He was born in Oberschonau, Hessen Germany and came to America with his family in 1845 when he was 11 years old.
He married Caroline Hornburg on November 22, 1860, they had 11 children:
You will see a five year gap in the birth of their first child and the second. He was a soldier in the Confederate Army and was captured. When he was released, he had to walk home.
As a young man he worked at the Stage Coach Inn for his father, hitching the teams and working on the leather. Also he would have been the one to help Valentine build their home, being the oldest son.
