Born in Wythe County, Virginia and
died in Stoneburg, Montague County, Texas
*John was the son of William and Elizabeth (Hurst) Harrell. He married Lovey Caroline Fletcher in about 1844, and they had 11 children. Lovey died from childbed fever after giving birth to the last child, and he married Melissa Boles. He and Melissa had seven children. Lovey's grandchildren called Melissa "Grannie Lissie."
John was a farmer. He lived near Jonesville in Lee County, Virginia, where Lovey and all of their children were born. In 1860 he had real property valued at $11,000 and personal property valued at $749, according to the U.S. Census. He stayed in Virginia until about 1870 when he and his family moved to McKinney, Collin County, Texas. The Civil War had taken its toll on the economy of Virginia. They went by boat down the Ohio River to the Mississippi River to New Orleans, and then by wagon train to Texas.
