Civil War Confederate
October 10, 1848 - November 17, 1920
John Thomas Carr was born in Arkansas to Stephen and Martha Williams Carr. His father died before he was 10, leaving the widow and five children. On the eve of the Civil War, the family moved to Southern Missouri. Facing anarchy and near starvation in the war, John's younger brother William Elijah Carr joined the Union Army as a bugler in 1862. Shortly after that, the family moved back to Arkansas where John Thomas lied about his age and joined the Confederate Army. Both John Thomas and William served until the end of the war, but fortunately never faced each other in battle. In 1875 the by now adult Carr Siblings and their mother moved to Erath County, Texas. There, all of them became land owners. John and his brother Joseph "Newt" Carr never married and became owners of several farms together, renting some out and working others.
