Purple Heart
Served in the European conflict. He was an advance scout in the 8th Infantry Division until wounded in the fighting at Brest, France. Upon recovery, he then served as a heavy machine gunner until the end of the war. He survived the horrific battle of the Hurtgen Forest and several other frontline engagements as his unit moved into Rhineland and shortly before Germany surrendered. Upon discharge, he received the Purple Heart, Good Conduct, and American Theater Campaign Medals. He also received the EAME Campaign Medal w/3 Bronze Stars.
