Henry Curtis,"Jack", was born to John Howard Strickland and wife, Emma Epsie New Strickland in Rochelle, La.--Grant Parish. His siblings were Allie "Bernice", Mamie "Kathleen", Hazel Marie, and Margorie Mildred. He attended the New London school system, and, when the school exploded from a gas leak in 1937, Jack was one of the most injured child. He spent 6 weeks in the hospital with head injuries, while many of his classmates were being buried (burials of Hunt Oil employees children paid by H. L. Hunt). He graduated from New London High School in 1940 and from Texas Baptist Seminary in Henderson. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II as a combat infantryman in the Philippine Islands, Ryukyus, Okinawa and other South Pacific areas. He was awarded the Purple Heart, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal with two Bronze Stars and Bronze Arrowhead, and "Philippine Liberation Ribbon with two Bronze Stars". He was wounded at some time in his military career.
Rev. Jack Strickland organized churches in Houston, Tx.,Snyder, Colorado, Hobbs, N.Mexico, and Overton, Tx..serving for years as pastor of the Overton Missionary Baptist Church, Overton, Tx. He was past president of Overton-New London Area Chamber of Commerce, and a member of Overton Rotary Club.
He was married to Leona "Faye" Campbell (b. 10-17-1924 Bastrop, La.-Morehouse Parish). They had a son, Wallace "Dale" Strickland. "Jack" died at 74 years old in Overton, Tx.-Rusk Co. He was buried in the Overton City Cemetery beside his parents, John Howard and Emma Strickland. Jacks sister, Hazel (1918-1998), is also buried with her husband, Joseph Clarence Nelson (1915-1994) in this cemetery
