Genaro "Henry" Hernandez, 76, passed away on Tuesday, January 5, 2016.

Funeral services will be at 2:00p.m., Friday, January 8, 2016 at St. Francis Catholic Church. Burial will follow in Abilene Municipal Cemetery, under the direction of Elliott-Hamil Funeral Home, 542 Hickory St. Visitation will be Thursday evening from 6:00p.m. - 8:00p.m. at the funeral home. Serving as pallbearers will be Jason Gonzales, Roman Flores, Jr., Ray Hernandez, Jr., Daniel Cruz, Jr., Anthony Jojola, and Juan Gonzales.
Genaro was born on March 27, 1939 in Goliad, Texas to Genaro Hernandez and Francisca (Gonzales) Hernandez.
At the age of 9 he helped his father work in the fields. At the age of 16 he began working with Bontke Construction and then went to work with Hardin Simmons in the maintenance department. Later he worked for Underwood's Barbeque Restaurant for 25 years before going to Nucorp. Then he began his career in concrete working with Calvin Lusk before continuing with Walter Fraser Construction for the last 25 years.
On August 14, 1954 Genaro married Lydia Diaz in Haskell, TX. Genaro and Lydia were members of St. Francis Catholic Church here in Abilene. They both loved their time working on their yard and in their garden. They also enjoyed their evenings sitting on the patio and listening to the radio.
Genaro always put everyone else's needs first and the love for his wife was like no other. He was adored and loved by his grandchildren.
Genaro was preceded in death by his infant son, Raymundo; his parents, Genaro and Francisca Hernandez; his sisters, Lydia Alfaro and Hilda Alaniz; a brother, Maximo Hernandez, Sr.; and two grandchildren, Angel Hernandez and Patricia Lynn Hernandez.
Survivors include his wife of 61 years, Lydia Diaz Hernandez; sons, Raynaldo Hernandez and wife, Omelia of Lubbock, Ricardo Hernandez and wife, Dora of Abilene; four daughters, Linda Harpel and husband, Paul, Delia Flores and husband, Roman, Sr., Christina Segura, and Teresa Hernandez all of Abilene; special son and daughter, Juan and Zulema Santiago; two brothers, Placido Hernandez and wife, Tonia of Killeen, and Pedro Medina of Maxwell, TX; two sisters, Maria H. Gutierrez of Dallas and Ninfa Rivas and husband, Marcelino of San Marcos, TX; 16 grandchildren; 22 great grandchildren along with many nieces and nephews who loved him deeply.
You will be missed; our Dad, Father, Daddy, Pops, Papa, Popo, Grandpa, Abuelo, and "G".
