William was born in Gainesville to Harold and Elizabeth Jones Tanner. He married Billie Wolfe April 24, 1943.
William joined the U.S. Army Air Corps and attained the rank of captain. He was flight Commander for B-25 bombers in the South Pacific, flying 40 missions. He never lost a crewman or a plane under his command.
