OLIVER, SUSAN JANE, Passed away peacefully on February 3, 2008 from complications related to an eight-month battle with ALS. She was born November 16, 1942 to Dr. and Mrs. Alfred Kahn, Jr. in Matoon, Illinois, but spent her childhood in Little Rock, Arkansas. She attended the University of Texas at Austin before moving to Dallas. Susan was a longtime member of Highland Park Presbyterian Church and attended Bible Study Fellowship. She was a Sustainer in the Junior League of Dallas and active in the Dallas Womans Club and Athenaeum Book Club, but her greatest joy was her family. She is survived by her devoted husband of 41 years, Thomas W. Oliver; daughter, Marion Oliver Henry and her husband, James N. Henry Jr.; son, Thomas W. Oliver, Jr., and his wife, Ashley Adams Oliver; grandchildren, James N. Henry III, Eloise Suzanne Henry, Hope Adams Oliver and Thomas W. Oliver III; father, Dr. Alfred Kahn, Jr.; brother, Dr. Alfred Kahn III and his wife, Susan; sister, Marion Kahn; and numerous nieces, nephews, and other family. She was preceded in death by her mother, Redith White Kahn. Susan was loved and adored by her family and many friends. She was a loving wife and doting mother who took great pride in her children and grandchildren. She was an inspiration to all as she battled a cruel disease with amazing grace, poise and strength. Susan cared deeply for others, loved to laugh and constantly strove to help family and friends come to terms with her illness. Because of her family, friends and strong faith in Christ, she experienced great peace and joy even in the midst of her struggle with ALS. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m., Wednesday, February 6th at Sparkman/Hillcrest Funeral Home. A memorial service to celebrate her life will be held at 3:30 p.m., Thursday, February 7th at Highland Park Presbyterian Church, 3821 University Dr., Dallas, Texas with Dr. Woody Strodel, officiating. The family would like to express heartfelt gratitude for the tremendous support and extraordinary care Susan received from Dr. Jeb Miers, Dr. Daragh Heitzman and the specialists at the Texas Neurology ALS clinic sponsored by the MDA. In lieu of flowers, donations in Susans name may be made to the Northeast ALS Consortium ("NEALS"), 149 13TH Street, Room 2274, Charlestown, Massachusetts 02129 or to the Salesmanship Club of Dallas.
