TEXAS CITY – I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith…

I, Lucille Martin Artis, was born in Texas City, Texas on January 2, 1924, I was educated in the public schools of Texas City, attending Booker T. Washington High School and later in Galveston, Texas where I was a 1940 graduate of Central High School. At an early age, I united with Greater Barbour's Chapel Baptist Church in Texas City and remained a loyal and dedicated member until my health failed. Serving as President of the General Usher's and Nurse's Aide Department; Missionary Society; B. T. U. Coordinator and working with the Youth Department, I was also active in the Southwest Central District Association where I served as Vice President of Mission II and the Ushers Department.

My fraternal and civic affiliations include: past secretary, Lakeview Court #262 Heroines of Jericho, member, Winn Assembly #234 Order of the Golden Circle; Life Member, Past President and Secretary of the Mainland Branch, N.A.A.C.P., and a member, A. Phillip Randolph Institute.

I was employed at Union Carbide in Texas City and later with Hitchcock I.S.D. as Cafeteria Manager until my retirement.

On Monday, March 12, 2007, God called me to my eternal rest. I was welcomed at the Heavenly gates by my parents, Rev. C. Martin, Augusta and Booker T. Johnson; and my daughter, Willietta Mayes Williams

I leave my most cherished memories in the hearts of my devoted and loving husband of 55 years, Clarence Artis of Texas City; my two sons, Richard Wesley (Maybelline) Mayes of California and Shawn Keith (Denesia) Artis of Houston; my 7 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; my sister, Charles Johnson of Beaumont; my nieces, nephews, other family, my Barbour's Chapel Church Family; former co-workers and dear friends.

My viewing will be held from 1:00 to 5:00 p.m. Friday, March 16, 2007, at the Mainland Funeral Home Chapel in La Marque and continue after 5:30 p.m. at my church, Greater Barbour's Chapel Baptist Church, 7420 FM 1765 where my family, friends and other organizations will reflect during a celebration of my life beginning at 7:00 p.m. My Home Going Services will be 12:00 p.m. Saturday, March 17, 2007 at Greater Barbour's Chapel Baptist Church with my pastor, Rev. James E. Brown, Sr., officiating. I will be entombed at Grace Memorial Park Cemetery in Hitchcock.

I want you to love each other and continue to serve the Lord so that we may meet again in our Father's House.

Love Always, Lucille
