Mrs. Mattie L. Childress, died in Hillcrest Hospital, Waco at 12:40 p.m. Friday, July 2. She was visiting a daughter there.

Mrs. Childress, a retired nurse, lived in Collingsworth county during her girlhood and as a young woman, then returned here in 1968, several years after the death of her husband.

In Wellington, her activities included work with the Retired Senior Volunteer Program, Midway Extension Homemakers Club and Thomas Nursing Center Auxiliary.

She was a member of the Church of Christ.

Born July 20, 1904, at Wynnewood, then in the Indian Territory, she was the daughter of Charley and Rose Baker Ogletree. She came here as a small child and lived in the Marella, Lillie, Salt Fork area, where she grew up and attended school. She married Demos Childress November 16, 1921 in Collingsworth County and they farmed at Swearingen until they moved to Borger.

He died July 19, 1953.

Mrs. Childress worked for Phillips Petroleum Co., during World War II and as a nurse's aide at Borger and later in California, Venita, OK and Silverton. She was a practical nurse after returning here.

Survivors are two daughters, Joyce Jones of Waco and Cleta Nite of Amarillo; two sisters, Mrs. David Peters, and Mrs. Christine Jolley of LaHabra, CA, 6 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
