Three persons - a man and two women - were killed Sunday night when their car crashed into the side of a Greyhound bus on Highway 66 at Lela.
The dead are:
Gwen Hall, 49; Mrs. Era Cleaton, 47 and Mrs. Alice Hardick, 51. All were residents of Borger.
The bus driver, Howard Wayne Suttle, 33, of Amarillo, suffered only a bruised elbow. The empty bus was enroute from Oklahoma City to Amarillo.
A short distance ahead of the bus was a fully loaded one. Suttle said the loaded bus had just gone out of sight over a hill when the accident occurred.
Officers said the automobile collided with the left front of the bus, just behind the front wheel. The bus was traveling west on U.S. 66 and the car, a 1957 model sedan, was headed north on Farm-to-Market Road 1547, when the accident occurred.
Highway patrolmen said the car sped across the two east-bound lanes of the highway and the divider stripe between the two lanes, striking the bus which was in the far right lane.
The accident occurred about 10:30 p.m.
Bodies of the three victims were brought to Shamrock in a Richerson Ambulance and the following day were sent to the Ed Brown Funeral Home in Borger for burial.
Mrs. Hardick was the owner of the Alice Cafe in Borger, and Mrs. Cleaton was her sister-in-law and worked at the cafe. Mr. Hall was a long-time friend of the two.
Mrs. Hardick and Mrs. Cleaton closed the cafe at 7:30 p.m., and accompanied by Mr. Hall, drove Mrs. Hardick's brother, Emery Cleaton, to Wellington, where he is employed. The three were returning to Borger when the crash occurred.
Mrs. Hardick was driving the car, which belonged to Mr. Cleaton, when they left Wellington.
