BORGER - J.P (Junro) Johnston, 93, died Wednesday, June 29, 2011.

Services will be at 3 p.m. Friday in Brown Funeral Home Chapel of the Fountains in Borger.

J.P. was born July 31, 1917, in Sharon, Okla. The second of seven children born to Grover P. Johnston and Lillie Barnes Johnston. J.P. was the last surviving member of that family. Deceased siblings were Charles Johnston, Claralee Johnston, Elton Ray Johnston, Jack Johnston, James Johnston, Bessie Lou Dugan, and half-brother Casey Garrett.

The Johnston family had been prosperous throughout the twenties. Grover Johnston, through his own efforts, successfully operated a restaurant, pool hall and grain elevator in the Sharon/Vici area. Tragic events, however, finally destroyed these assets in the mid-thirties. A slow, fatal illness took the life of the mother and the onset of the Great Depression. The departure of the father to California left the siblings placed with various relatives. J.P. was married that year (1935) to Elizabeth Stambaugh and began a search for better employment.

J.P. was determined to provide for a new wife and siblings. Having heard of jobs in the Texas Panhandle oil fields, he hopped a slow freight train for this area. He started work with the Cabot Carbon Company in Skellytown in 1936. There followed the birth of daughter, Bette, in 1937 and eight successful years with Cabot.

By 1944, jobs proliferated with the advent of World War II. An even better opportunity arose, with a job transfer to the Phillips Co-Poly plant in Borger. The family lived in the Bunavista area, as J.P.'s employment with Phillips continued to grow. In 1945, a son, Bill, was born and J.P. later moved the family into the city of Borger.

In 1968, Elizabeth Johnston died in the family home. His job meanwhile rose to Manager of Quality Control. J.P. married Lois Williams in 1978.

J.P. Johnston was an avid sports fan throughout his life. He loved golf. He scored two "holes in one" within a six week period. In addition, he loved hunting and fishing. Armed with rod and reel (and his trusty inner tube/waders), he was well-known for always bringing in lunkers where everyone else couldn't get a bite.

Survivors include a daughter, Bette Martin and son-in-law Jerry Martin of Canyon; a son, Bill Johnston and daughter-in-law, Marsha Johnston of Borger; his grandchildren, Terry Martin of Yorba Linda, Calif., Laura Eroche of Houma, La., Jarrett Johnston and Jeff Johnston of Amarillo; his great-grandchildren, Kyle Eroche of Houma, London Johnston of Lubbock and Emerson Johnston and Elijah Johnston, both of Amarillo.
