Thomas James Carter, 76, of Amarillo died Thursday, Jan. 6, 2011.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday in Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors Ivy Chapel, 2800 Paramount Blvd. Burial will be in West Park Cemetery in Hereford.

Mr. Carter was born May 24, 1934, in Hereford to Thomas and Lula Carter. He earned his bachelor's degree from Texas Tech University.

He married Melba Stoner on Aug. 17, 1957, in Arkansas. He was a Gideon and was in the Jailhouse Ministry for 30 years. Mr. Carter was a member of the Amarillo Bible Church.

He was preceded in death by a son, Jeffry Lynn Carter; a grandson, Thomas James "Trey" Carter III; and a granddaughter, Briana Briggs.

Survivors include his wife, Melba Carter of Amarillo, a son, Thomas James Carter Jr. and wife Sharyn of Amarillo; two daughters, Susan Johnson and husband Ronnie of Borger and Kathleen Ellis and husband Todd of Amarillo; a foster daughter, Kelly Phillips; six grandchildren, Jeremiah, Josie, Darian, Bailey and Michala Johnson, and Logan Ellis; a great-grandchild, Nathaniel Briggs.

The family will receive friends from 5 to 6 p.m. today at the funeral home.

The family suggests memorials be to Gideons International, 2200 S.W. Seventh Ave., Amarillo, TX 79106.

Melba Carter, 75, of Amarillo died Tuesday, June 14, 2011.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday in Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors Ivy Chapel, 2800 Paramount Blvd., with the Rev. Jim Gianoutsos, former pastor of Amarillo Bible Church, now of Lakepoint Church in Humble, officiating. Burial will be at 1:30 p.m. in West Park Cemetery in Hereford.

Mrs. Carter was born Nov. 1, 1935, in Calico Rock, Ark., to William and Susan Stoner. She was a foster mother to more than 250 children for more than 17 years. She was a wonderful housewife who loved and helped everyone she could; she was a true neighbor to all.

Mrs. Carter was also a brown belt in jujitsu.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas James Carter Sr.; two sons, Jeffrey Lynn Carter and Thomas James Carter Jr.; and two grandchildren, Thomas James "Trey" Carter III and Briana Briggs.

Survivors include three daughters, Susan Johnson and husband Ronnie of Borger, and Kathleen Ellis and husband Todd and Kelly Phillips, all of Amarillo; six grandchildren, Jeremiah Johnson, Josie Johnson, Darian Johnson, Bailey Johnson, Michala Johnson and Logan Ellis; and four great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 7:30 p.m. today at the funeral home.
