Cassie Mathies Dowell, 90, of Hereford, died Sunday, April 12, 1992.
Services were held at 10 a.m. today at Rose Chapel at Gililland-Watson Funeral Home with the Rev. Lanny Wheeler, chaplain at King's Manor, officiating. Burial followed in West Park Cemetery.
Mrs. Dowell was born Oct. 29, 1902 in Oklahoma. She married William Hubert Dowell on Dec. 17, 1924 in Crosbyton. He died Feb. 22, 1969. Mrs. Dowell moved to Hereford in 1925 from Lamesa.
A school teacher, she organized Campfire in Hereford (the national charter was obtained in 1928) and was its director for many years. Campfire met in her home for a while before moving to the Courthouse and other sites in Hereford before the permanent "hut" was built in north Hereford under Dowell's leadership. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, Delta Kappa Gamma and Daughters of the American Revolution. She was a member of First United Methodist Church.
Survivors include a niece; three nephews; and several great nieces and nephews.
Members of Hereford Campfire served as honorary pallbearers. Memorials may be made to the Hereford Campfire Council.
