HEREFORD - Charles Rex Higgins, 66, died Tuesday in Amarillo.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday in Hereford First Baptist Church with the Rev. Ron Cook, pastor, and the Rev. Doug Manning, Baptist Minister, officiating. Burial will be in West Park Cemetery by Gililland-Watson Funeral Home.

Mr. Higgins was born in Hereford. He married Alta Mae Fortenberry in 1948 at Hereford. He was a wholesale gasoline salesman and a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Army Air Corps.

Survivors include his wife; a son, Clifford Higgins of Fort Worth; three brothers, Ted Higgins of Fort Worth, Fred Higgins and Bob Higgins, both of Hobbs, N.M.; four sisters, Billie Harris of Pueblo, Colo., Luella Thomas of Hereford, Mattie Thomas of Tucumcari, N.M., and Alberta Gordon of Benson, Ariz.; and a granddaughter.

The family requests memorials be made to the Family Life Center of the First Baptist Church in Hereford.

Alta Mae Higgins, one of Hereford’s centennial residents, passed away Monday, January 22 at the age of 101.

There will be a Visitation for Mrs. Higgins on Sunday, January 28th from 12:00 pm to 4:00 pm in the Rose Chapel of the Hereford Heritage Funeral Home.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held on Monday, January 29th at 10:00 am at the First Baptist Church in Hereford. Burial will follow at West Park Cemetery.

Services are under the direction of Hereford Heritage Funeral Home.

Alta Mae was born in Floyd County, Texas to Jack and Robbie Fortenberry on April 16, 1916. The family moved to Hereford, Texas in 1926 and she met and married Charles Rex Higgins on June 12, 1948.

Alta Mae earned her teaching degree at West Texas State and enjoyed a 34-year long career as a fourth-grade teacher for Deaf Smith County children. She was an active member of First Baptist Church and was also a member of the Bippus Extension Club and the Delta Gamma Teachers Sorority. In addition, she was named Pioneer of the Year.

Mrs. Higgins is preceded in death by her parents, her husband of 40 years, Charles Rex Higgins, and by three of her sisters: Mary Dorris, Stella Lee Sevier, and Christine Larson and her husband Inman, her two brothers: Jay Morris Fortenberry and his wife Melva, Glen Fortenberry, and her son Clifford Eugene Higgins.

She is survived by her two sisters: Kate (late husband Jimmie) Bradley of Adrian, Texas, and Chloe and husband Jackie Dowd of Lehigh Acres, Florida, as well as by her daughter-in-law Jeana Higgins of Amarillo, Texas, and her granddaughter Jessica Higgins, also of Amarillo, Texas. Her two sisters-in-law Louella Thomas of Hereford, Texas, and Alberta Cantwell of Arizona survive her along with her brother-in-law Ted Higgins of Hereford, Texas.

Surviving her as well are several nieces, nephews, and cousins all of whom love and will miss her greatly.
