*Obituary
Alta Sue "Susie" Johnson Magee was born to Johnny Johnson and Sarah Annie Shirley Johnson on April 6, 1936. She married James Don Magee, the love of her life, on February 28, 1953. He designed and built their home, where she resided until her passing on March 26, 1936. Dad grew up in Rose City and always thought of Mom as his beautiful Iris, like those growing wild in the river swamp there.
Faithfully, each year, Dad would pick the first bloom for her. Eventually, he planted her a garden full of them at the driveway entrance that is still there today.
Mom's favorite time of the year was Spring, so I am not surprised that the Lord chose this time to bring her home at the blooming of the first Iris. She loved all flowers, even the tiny ones most never noticed. She was awed at God's creation, studied flowers carefully, and knew their names. Until very recently, she still made beautiful flower arrangements and delicious cakes. Of course, she made flowers for the cakes. The roses she made looked real.
Music filled our home as Mom had a beautiful soprano voice. The music from her singing and playing her baby grand blessed the whole neighborhood. She was a good friend to all her neighbors, affectionately called the "Lee Lane Ladies." They have loved each other as family and looked out for each other. As a true homemaker, she was a famous cook and made beautiful crafts, crocheted items, clothing, and loved painting on almost anything. My personal favorite was the purple Irises she painted on my tennis shoes.
She is preceded in death by her husband, James Don Magee. Her parents, Johnie Johnson and Sarah Annie Shirley Johnson Juve', her sister Nina Ruth Johnson Cook, Johnie Carolle Johnson and son-in-law Louis Munk, son-in-law Kevin Lee Whitaker, Sr. She is survived by her sister Mae Frances Johnson Manuel, her daughters: Carmen Suzanne Magee, Peggy Eileen Magee Munk, Connie Mae Magee Said and husband Dr. Samuel Said and Jennifer Dee Magee Whitaker. She is also survived by her grandchildren: Ben Duhon, Donavin Duhon, James Duhon, Michelle Brustman, Kasey Corbitt, Jessica Corbitt, Jeremy Forrest, Krystina Forrest, Hannah Said, Priscilla Ring, Peter Said, Lee Whitaker, Madeline Tatum, Preston Whitaker, and Aaron Whitaker and was especially proud of her 23 great-grandchildren. Her family was the most beloved of all.
Visitation will be at the Memorial Funeral Home at 1750 TX-12 Vidor, Texas, on Saturday, April 2, 2022, between 6 and 8 P.M.
On Sunday, April 3, 2022, the funeral will be at 1 P.M. at The First United Methodist Church Orange, located at 502 6th Street Orange, Texas.
Burial will follow immediately after the funeral service at the Hayman (Liberty Hill) Cemetery located at 3820 FM 2025 Coldspring, Texas.
Pallbearers will be Ben Duhon, Donavin Duhon, James Duhon, Kasey Corbitt, Casper White, Jeremy Forrest, Lee Whitaker, Preston Whitaker, and Aaron Whitaker.
