HEREFORD, March 7 - Funeral services for Lemuel Sawyer, 82, former Deaf Smith County farmer, are pending with Gililland Funeral Home.

Mr. Sawyer died Wednesday morning in Gardena, Calif., where he had been making his home with a daughter, Mrs. Annabel Kropff.

A native of Texas, Mr. Sawyer was born Aug. 28, 1875. The family moved to Deaf Smith County from Grayson County in 1907, and Mr. Sawyer farmed for more than 20 years in the Summerfield community west of Hereford.

Survivors include two sons, Alton and L.F., both of California; four daughters, Mrs. Flora Shipman and Mrs. Ruby Fay Runyon, both of California, Mrs. Lillian Payne of Pottsboro, Tex., and Mrs. Kropff of Gardena; three brothers, John Sawyer of Alameda, Calif., Logan Sawyer of Smithville, Tex., and Jesse H. Sawyer of Denver; and two sisters, Mrs. Elizabeth Crowell, Lone Grove, Okla., and Mrs. Ruthie Patterson of Hereford.

Summerfield Farmer
Mr. and Mrs. Lem Sawyer came to Deaf Smith County from Grayson County , Tex. , in 1907 and first settled 18 miles north of Hereford . Later he farmed at Summerfield and on a place two miles north of town. They made the trip to the plains in a buggy and covered wagon train. He operated one of the first threshing machines in the county.
Lemuel Sawyer was born Aug. 28, 1875, in Grayson County and was married to Miss Kate Kerr at Ardmore , Okla. , on Dec. 1, 1901. They were members of the Methodist Church . She died after they had left Hereford in 1927 to live at Whitesboro, and he died in California on March 5, 1958.
They were the parents of: Flora (Mrs. Doyle) Shipman, deceased; Alton Sawyer, Ruby Faye (Mrs. Ernest) Runyon, Annabel (Mrs. John) Kropff, and L. J. Sawyer, all of California; and Lillian (Mrs. Everett) Payne, Pottsboro, Tex. (A History of Deaf Smith County, by Bessie Patterson, 1964;

TAYLOR, Oct. 28 - (Spl) - Mrs. Katie Sawyer of Lavalle, Mo., 59, died suddenly at six p.m. Tuesday night at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Doyle E. Shipman. She had arrived in Taylor Sunday for a visit.

Survivors are her husband, L. Sawyer of Lavalle; six children, L.J. Sawyer of Lavalle, Allon Sawyer of Bozier City, La.; Mrs. Lillian Payne of Sadler, Mrs. Ruby Faye Runyon and Mrs. Annabelle Kropff of Hereford, Mrs. Shipman of Taylor.

The body is being held at the Sloan Funeral home in Taylor, pending word from relatives.
