HEREFORD - Herman L. "Herm" Drake, 92, died Thursday, Nov. 12, 2009.
Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. Monday in Rest Lawn Memorial Park by Rix Funeral Directors. Mr. Drake was born June 13, 1917, in Slidell to Lonnie B. and Bertha Viola Young. He married Mildred Young on Dec. 21, 1934, in Denton County and moved to Hereford in 1937 from Wise County. Herman was a longtime resident of Hereford, working as a farmer and for Deaf Smith County for one year. He was then employed by the Texas Department of Transportation for 20 years, retiring in 1979.
After retirement, he continued working for Oglesby Equipment until 1989. Herman was a member of Hereford Gun Club and a lifelong member of the NRA. He was also a member of First Baptist Church in Hereford.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Mildred; two sons, John Bob and Bill Ed; and a granddaughter, Laurie Drake.
Survivors include a son, Lee Drake and wife Betty of Hereford; five grandsons, Mark Drake and wife Holly of Midland, Sam Drake and wife Melissa of Rio Rancho, N.M., Michael Drake and wife Jennifer of Oakland, Calif., Charles Drake and wife Deborah of Alvord and Stephen Drake of Hereford; three granddaughters, Lisa Formby and husband Chip and Karen McNutt and husband Harold, all of Hereford, and Whitney Purcell and husband Chris of Borger; 17 great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren.
