A.H. "Alvie" Hughes, 94, of Big Spring, died on Monday, March 14, 2005, at his residence. Graveside funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, March 17, 2005 at the Peace Chapel at Trinity Memorial Park, Big Spring, with Rev. Jeff Janca, pastor of Forsan Baptist Church, officiating.

He was born on January 30, 1911, in San Saba, Texas and married Marie Jackson on April 12, 1949 in Seminole, Texas.

Alvie had farmed and ranched in Knott for 19 years and in Hobbs, New Mexico for 50 years, returning to Big Spring in 2001.

He took pride in his farming and ranching and was named Farmer of the Year in Lea County, New Mexico for 3 years and had the highest yield crop in Lea County in 1971.

Alvie loved animals, especially horses and dogs.

He was a practical joker.

A man of integrity and honesty, he was trustworthy and loved and respected by all.

Survivors include his wife, Marie Hughes of Big Spring; two sons and daughters-in-law, Nathan and Deanie Hughes of Big Spring and Calvin "Bud" and Joe Hughes of Knott; one step son, Troy Martin and wife, Runeil of Sulphur Springs; his grandchildren, Sherry Yezak of San Antonio, James Morgan and wife, Barbara and Ricky Hughes and wife, Leah all of Big Spring, Connie Zant and husband, David of Ackerly, Linda Huston and husband, Rick and Gary Hughes and wife, Lorie all of Gilmer; his step grandchildren, Mitch Gil, Melaina Ferrell, Michele Greenfield and Troy M. Martin; a sister-in-law, Frankie Briggs of Odessa; and many great grandchildren, great great grandchildren and nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by one daughter, Mattie Gelene King; two brothers, Earnest Briggs and Buster Briggs and two sisters, Mary Lee Kelley and Ada Patterson.
