A jury in Bowie County, Texas, convicted John William Cockrum, age 27, of the murder of Eva May, an elderly lady who ran a rural convenience store and was known to keep cash for use in cashing payroll checks. Before dawn on May 29, 1986, Cockrum entered the store, which was attached to May's residence, robbed May, and then shot her in the head at close range. Jerry Morgan, who drove Cockrum to the scene, remained in the car and did not learn of the slaying until later. John William Cochrum was executed by lethal injection in Texas on 30 Sept 1997.
