Porter - Elbel Cemetery
Comal County,
Texas

This is an old small family cemetery located just south of Rebecca Creek Road about 2.5 miles east of Hwy-281. Currently, it is well maintained, with a pipe and wire fence, and a grass-covered surface. However, several gravestones appear to have been disturbed, broken up and scattered across the property both inside and outside the existing fence. Family stories told to the existing owners indicate some graves were disinterred and moved elsewhere. In order to preserve some remnants of damaged stones, the current owners have incorporated three of these into a limestone and mortar wall at the nearby house on the property, as is the custom in Germany. Here, in Find-a-Grave, memorials have been created for these and also several grave coverings/markers with insufficient information to identify the deceased person; these may represent graves that have been disinterred. Interestingly, the two known Porter graves were among those moved (to Comal Cemetery), so no Porter graves exist anymore in the "Porter-Elbel Cemetery". The Comal County Genealogy Society booklet "Lest We Forget" (1989) lists this cemetery on page 97, indicating that 6 marked graves were inventoried at that time, and some mention is made of other damaged/moved graves. The cemetery is not marked on the county map series by the Texas Dept. of Transportation.
