Mrs. Clegg passed from this world into Heaven on February 21, 2019 at 97 years of age. She was born at Rock Creek, Grayson County, Texas, on January 18, 1922 to parents George Henry and Cecil Barnes Burrow. Her mother always told her it was the day the Red River froze over.

Marcella attended the Rock Creek School through first grade, then her family moved to Dexter, Texas, where she attended the Dexter Schools. She would occasionally play the piano for the local Baptist churches in Dexter and the surrounding area. Later, Marcella boarded with a lady in Gainesville, Texas so she could finish her education at Gainesville High School. After graduation in 1940, she worked at Montgomery Ward on the town square. Marcella would always walk to work, rain or shine. She had wonderful stories from growing up on the farm, where she picked cotton and took care of her chores.

Marcella fell in love with Woodrow Ulysses Clegg, whose family had a farm north of Dexter in the early 1940’s. She traveled by train to Del Rio, Texas to marry Woodrow, who was a radio operator during WWII. They were married on February 20, 1942 and lived in a rented bedroom. Woodrow developed the measles the first week they were married.

Approximately a year later, Marcella and Woodrow were transferred to San Antonio, Texas for Woodrow to be a radio instructor for the U.S. Air Force. Their first child, Charles Phillip (Phil) Clegg, was born at Fort Sam Houston. They moved back to Gainesville after the war and had their second son, Bobby Keith Clegg in 1954. Marcella lived on her own after Woodrow passed away in 1983 and had recently moved to the Wheeler Place in early 2018.

Marcella was the oldest child in her family and had a younger sister, Margie, and a younger brother, George Carroll, who lives with his wife, Sandra, in Hudson Oaks, Texas.

Marcella was a member of First Baptist Church of Gainesville, Texas for 73 years. She enjoyed participating in the church women’s organizations, playing bridge, attending her son’s activities, and traveling. Her family was the center of her life and she loved hosting them at her home for all kinds of special occasions.

Survivors include: son Phil Clegg and wife Janice of Plano; son Keith Clegg and wife Lisa of Gainesville; granddaughter Pamela Clegg Garner; granddaughter Lisa Clegg Vestal and husband Cyrus; and six great-grandchildren. Survivors also include four living nieces and nephews: Gailen Harrison, Bobby Harrison, Leigh Anne Burrow Sallaz, and Carol Anne Burrow Cotton.

The family would like to express their gratitude to the compassionate and loving staff of the Wheeler Place for their care.
