Mary Ann Adams MAVERICK

City #1 Cemetery
Bexar County,
Texas

Mary Ann Adams was born March 16, 1818 in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. She was the daughter of William Lewis and Agatha Strother [Lewis] Adams.

Samuel August Maverick met Mary Ann Adams in Alabama and married her on August 4, 1836 at her mother's home near Tuscalosa. The couple moved to Texas in 1837 with their household which included their first born son, Samuel Maverick, Jr. Most of Mary Ann's efforts went toward raising her family in the early years of their marriage. She came into her own after Sam died. She was a member of the San Antonio Historical Society and the Daughters of the Republic of Texas. She helped to promote the annual Battle of Flowers Parade. She kept diaries of her frontier days and in 1880 she edited and published memoirs from these diaries. These memoirs have provided a vibrant picture of life on the Texas frontier. She died on February 24, 1898 and is buried beside her husband in City Cemetery No. 1., San Antonio, Texas.
