News reached this community on the 25th of the death of Uncle Dick Whitfield. He was laid to rest in the Locklin cemetery on the same day. Uncle Dick was one of the best and most honorable men of the San Gabriel community.

Dr. F.M. Whitfield Dead
Dr. F.M. Whitfield, aged 80 years, died at his home at San Gabriel Thursday night, Dec. 24, after an illness of only a few days from a complication of diseases, though he had declining health for several months. Funeral services were held at the San Gabriel Christian church at 3 o'clock p.m. Christmas day was followed by interment in the Locklin cemetery, the obsequies being conducted by Rev. Polk C. Webb.
Decedent was born at Mortonsville, Ky., 8, 1835, and at the outbreak of the Civil war he enlisted in the Confederate army and was assigned to the hospital corps where he did valiant service during the long struggle.
He came to Texas with his family about thirty years ago and located at San Gabriel which has since been his home.
In his younger days he always took active part in the affairs of county and state and was bold and fearless advocate of the principles in which he believed and in his death the community has lost a most noble defender of right and an uncompromising foe to the wrong.
He is survived by his widow and one daughter, Mrs. H.H. Camp besides a number of grandchildren and other relatives.--Thorndale Thorn.
