OLD-TIME RESIDENT OF SHARP DIES SATURDAY
------------------
Hundreds Attend Funeral of Dan G. Davis at Sharp Sunday Afternoon - Burial at Lilac
------------------
Dan G. Davis, 90, an old-time resident of Milam county, died at his home at Sharp Saturday evening, April 2, following a short illness. Hundreds of friends attended the funeral services Sunday afternoon at 3 o'clock with Rev. Granger, Baptist pastor of Little River, in charge. Rev. Granger was assisted by Rev. Kelley, of the Rockdale and Sharp Presbyterian churches.
A resident of this section for many years, Davis was believed to be the oldest resident of Milam county. He has been engaged extensively in farming and stock raising and also conducted a mercantile business at Sharp, where he was always interested in anything relating to the welfare of his community. He was a Confederate veteran and had been a member of the Baptist church for 52 years.
Following the church services at Sharp the remains were conveyed to Lilac where interment was made at the now historical Graves' burial grounds. Many beautiful floral offerings were received.
The pall bearers were the six nephews of Mr. Davis.
Surviving are his widow, Mrs. Julia Davis, and the following children: Mrs. T. N. Pace, of Bynum, Texas; Mrs. Berry Davis, of Davilla, Texas; Judd Davis of Cameron; Will, Fred, and Dan Davis Jr., of Sharp. Eight grandchildren also survive, and two great-grandchildren and many other relatives.
Dan G. Davis was born in Boonville, Mo., November 24, 1836, and came to Texas with his parents in 1845 when in his ninth year. In 1871 he married Miss Julia Hill Graves, daughter of Dr. and Mrs. John Graves, who together with their children as early settlers, made that section famous. They were staunch supporters of schools and churches at a time when conditions were not established as now.
Mrs. Davis' brothers, Thomas H. Graves, Fred A. Graves and George S. Graves, who ere large planters and stockraisers, donated land and erected, at their own expense, a good school building in their neighborhood. They were also instrumental in building the church at Lilac. Mrs. Davis is the only survivor of her immediate family.
