James P. Coward, 82, of Cameron died Monday in a Cameron hospital.
Services were at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday at Marek-Burns-Laywell Funeral Home with the Rev. David Starkey officiating. Burial was in Marlow Cemetery.
Born in the Marlow community Jan. 7, 1903, Mr. Coward was a retired Cameron businessman. He operated Coward's Garage in Cameron for over 20 years. Prior to that he was a farmer in the Temple area. He moved his family to Cameron in 1942 and was employed by Santa Fe Railroad until 1945 when he opened his own garage in downtown Cameron.
Mr. Coward has been a member of the First Assembly of God Church in Cameron since 1958 where he has served in various capacities including treasurer and board member for the last 26 years. Upon his resignation from the board earlier this year due to ill health, he was elected Honorary Lifetime Member of the Board.
Mr. Coward was preceded in death by an infant daughter, five brothers and two sisters.
Survivors are his widow, Velma Coward; one son and daughter-in-law, Elton and Gloria Coward of Cameron; three daughters and sons-in-law, Wanda and Robert L. Shoaf of Houston, Nelda and Burrell McLerran of Waco, Barbara and Johnnie Schulte, Jr., of Houston; five grandchildren, Dianah Zbranek, Dennis McLerran, Karen and Clifford Schulte and Patrick Coward; three great-grandchildren, Angela, Debra and Tina Zbranek; one brother, Morris Coward; three sisters, Pearl Coward, Lou Russell and Avis Fuller.
