Mr. Alford enlisted in the U.S. Navy immediately following the attack of Pearl Harbor and spent over two years in the South Pacific as a radioman on a destroyer. Mr. Alford's ship participated in several battles including Guadalcanal and the Midway Islands and he was discharged on October 3, 1945 as a Third Class Petty Officer.
