H. W. “Ed” Dozier was born May 12, 1922 in Pine Bluff, Ark., to Edward H. and Bene Gene Dozier. He was raised in Monticello, Ark. and attended schools there including Arkansas A&M College of Business. He also attended the University of New Mexico. He retired from U.S. Air Force Reserve with the rank of Major on October 1967, and from the Bank of New Mexico on the same date.
He joined the staff of the Herring National bank, Vernon, on December 1967 as Executive Vice President and was promoted to President in January 1973 and served in that capacity until his retirement December 1985.
He was a member of the Vernon Chamber of Commerce and served as president for the year 1972. He was a former member of the Rotary Club and has been a member of the Vernon Lions Club for over 40 years. He is 32nd Degree Mason and served as Chaplain of Vernon Masonic Lodge #655.
Dozier served in the China, Burma, and India Theater during WWII after serving as a flight instructor of the U.S. Army Air Corps through 1942. He flew what is known as the “Hump” transporting fuel, ammunition, medicine, and personal needed to wage military action against the Japanese Army occupying China. He was awarded the Air Medal and the Distinguished Flying Cross.
He was a member of the First Baptist Church and taught the James-Carl Smith Sunday School Class for many years. He dearly loved the First Baptist Church and the Faith United Methodist Church and truly sought to be a faithful Christian servant in each. He also served as trustee for the First Baptist Church and served on various committees, primarily fund-raising committees.
He married Mary M. Hurd on Dec. 17, 1942. She preceded him in death in March 1992. He later married Gitano S. Holliday on Feb. 14, 1993. He was preceded in death by his parents, his daughter, Margaret Dozier Quelle, three brothers and two sisters.
He is survived by his wife Gitano of Vernon, stepson Cliff Holliday of Vernon, stepdaughter Sandra Holliday,of Lake Jackson, nine grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.
Dozier passed away on Saturday, May 11, 2013 in Wichita Falls. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m., Tuesday, May 14, 2013 at First Baptist Church. Officiating will be Dr. Darrell Monday and the Rev. Hilda Cavazas. Interment will be held at Wilbarger Memorial Park with Air Forces Honors under the direction of Sullivan Funeral Home.
Visitation will be 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., Monday, May 13, 2013 at Sullivan Funeral Home.
