DORIS EVELYN MINTER-MOORE-MYERS-STEWART was born on 16 March 1915 in Pine Forest, Hopkins County, Texas to Emmett Bascom Minter & Ruby Odell Bryarly.
Doris joined the Methodist Church at the age of 10, and served the TX A&M Wesley Foundation when she moved to Bryan. She also served Eastern Star for 60 years and held the titles of Deputy Grand Matron, Worthy Matron, and Associate Matron, among many other roles.
Doris earned her BS in Home Economics at ETSU, Commerce, TX; she studied at TX A & I Univ. and Cornell (NY); and achieved her Masters at TX Woman's Univ, Denton, TX. She taught public school for 33 years; 12 yrs in 5 TX school systems, and 21 years with the Agricultural Extension Service. She was a Principal and taught 7th through 10th grades at Lindenau School System, taught Science & Geography at Cuero Junior High-School, taught 1st through 4th grades at Bethel, taught 5th grade at Travis Elementary School during the day then taught the last period of Home Economics at the High School in Sulphur Springs, and she taught 4th grade at Robstown for the last 6 years of her public education career.
After her career in public education, Doris held County, State, and Federal positions through the Agricultural Extension Service. She began this work as a County Home Demonstration Agent. This position entailed educating thirteen 4-H Clubs and twelve Home Demonstration Clubs. Doris worked with low income individuals and families as a Home Management Specialist teaching adults about income tax deductions, money, and credit management. Her position as a Resource Management Specialist required her to write publications, articles, host live radio, & television programs to educate other Extension Agents and adults in the community (the Texas A&M Federal Extension Service is now titled the Texas A&M Cooperative Extension). The US Department of Agriculture asked Doris to write a Chapter in 2 Agriculture Year Books (1973 & 1974), which were printed in Washington, D.C.
Doris was first married to Marion Eugene Moore on 30 May 1936. They lived in Pine forest, Hopkins County, Texas, but went to Hugo, Choctaw County, Oklahoma for their wedding ceremony. Doris and Marion had TWO daughters:
Margaret Ruth Moore-Gleason (1937-2007) and
Ruby Sue Moore-Morrow (living).
Marion served in WW II, and with the distance Doris and Marion grew apart. Their marriage, as so many of the marriages from war days, resulted in divorce.
Doris was remarried on 24 September 1948 to Delbert Glenn Myers who passed away from cancer on 16 July 1952. Doris kept the name Myers until she remarried her ballroom dance partner, Terrell Claude Stewart on 27 August 1990. They had almost 16 full years of dancing together before Doris passed away.
Doris' accomplishments as an educator produced a daughter who was also well accomplished in the field of education, and on 5 November 2000 a school was named in her daughter's honor, the Margaret Moore-Gleason Elementary School, in the Cypress-Fairbanks school district, Houston, Texas.
Doris was a strict parent, grandparent, and great-grandparent with strong family values. Our family mourns the loss of a matriarch who instilled character into our family with loving discipline. My brother, sister, and I would frequently spend summers with her and have grand adventures in her huge pine trees. We were trained to call her Mamo, make our beds in the morning, eat all the food on our plates at meals, rinse our dishes after meals, complete chores upon the first request, go to church on Sundays, wash our hair squeaky clean amongst other hygiene routines, and to give her a hug before bedtime. She loved gardening and working with the earth, and taught us how she cared for her flowers, vegetables, fruits, and compost pile (where we sometimes found garden snakes). Being asked to pick some strawberries was always a clue that we were having a treat for dessert, if we cleaned our plates. She believed in balanced meals, and her delicious home-cooking brought the family together for many feasts. She was an educator, and taught us to unlock treasures through reading, and that sticking with a difficult task was more rewarding than quitting.
Doris was the survivor of breast cancer; she endured a full-mastectomy in 1966, and she was documented in the medical books for surviving pancreatic cancer after a tumor was removed in 1996. She passed away 10 years later, 3 months after her 91st birthday. Doris was a survivor who lived a full life. She and her "new" husband of almost 16 years went ballroom dancing with a group in the Methodist Church until she had a fatal stroke in May 2006. She woke-up with paralysis on the right side of her body, but said that "she wanted to live," so I encouraged her to work in her physical therapy sessions. About a month later she was told the physical therapy was not working so she would be going home. On 8 June 2006 Doris passed away while she was being loaded in the ambulance to leave the hospital.
