*Obituary for Nettie
Born on October 23, 1928 on a family farm in Mason County, Texas, Nettie spent her early years milking cows, gathering eggs, and learning the basics of cooking. She was educated in a one-room schoolhouse, and became a nurse after World War II. She married Carl Short on August 11, 1951, and settled in the West Texas town of Denver City. She raised her four children and made her home there for fifty-two years. She was very involved in the community; some of her favorite volunteer positions included the Pink Ladies at the hospital, Girl Scouts and Cub Scout leader, Meals on Wheels, Eastern Star, and various church activities. She supported Carl's coaching activities with the school district, and as the children grew, she herself took a position as the junior high snack bar manager and worked there for eighteen years. Nettie always had a love for cooking for family and friends. She developed a catering business and was famous especially for her pies. In 1991, Nettie published her cookbook, "Nettie Short's Favorite Recipes: She sold over 1,000 copies and the recipes and cookbooks are still enjoyed to this day by her family and friends. Nettie's other love was to travel, and was proud of the fact that she had visited all fifty states. She was also an accomplished bridge and 42 (dominos) player, and every family member would beg her to be her partner. In 2003, Nettie wished to be closer to her family and moved to Lubbock. She continued spreading her joy to her new neighbors and friends at Shadow Hills, and more recently Grand Court. She spent much of her free time sewing crafts, quilts, aprons and table lines for her family and to display and sell at community craft shows.

Nettie was preceded in death by her parents, Melvin and Emma Beam, and eight of her eleven siblings. Her beloved husband Carl also preceded her. She is survived by her four children: Barbara (Larry) Wolf of Bakersfield, CA; Don (Susie) Short of Plano; Elizabeth (Greg) Parks of Lubbock and Tom Short of Houston. She is also survived by her brother Lt. Col W.W. Beam and her sister Etta Faye Caylor. Nettie was blessed with eight grandchildren: Stacy, O.Brian (Amy), Steven (Jennifer), David, Brandee (Phill), Amy (Justin), Hayley, and Travis. She has three great-grandchildren: Samantha, Avonlea and Joanna. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to The Leukemia And Lymphoma Society or the South Plains Food Bank. Funeral Services will be conducted on Friday, October 27, 2017 at 11:00 A.M. in the Ratliff Funeral Home Chapel Denver City with Pastor Carl Shroyer officiating with interment in the Denver City Memorial Park.
