Obituary

Old Citizen Of Cameron Died Saturday

Mrs. B. J. Baskin, One of the City's Oldest and Best Men Passed After Brief Illness

On Sunday afternoon the large Methodist church would not accommodate the great throng of people who gathered to pay their respects to one of Cameron's best citizens, Mr. B. J. Baskin, whose death occurred Saturday morning.
His friends, from far and near, representing all classes and various nationalities, gathered until they had to turn away for lack of room, so great was this assembly. Cameron doubtless never recorded a larger funeral attendance.
As the solemn service opened, nothing could have been more appropriate than the soft notes of "Asleep in Jesus," rendered by a selected choir from Cameron's sweetest singers. Then followed the prayer by Dr. Gillon, with its gratitude for the memory of friendship and splendid example of Christian manhood, touching tenderly the life and service of the deceased.
Other consoling thoughts were borne gently to the grieving loved ones by that beautiful song, "Saved by Grace," renderee by Rev. Ham, the sweet-voiced evangelist in our midst.
The long procession, following the remains to Oak Hill Cemetery and extending almost from the church to the Silent City, was a fitting tribute to the man who had done so much to make Cameron what she is today - the home of a busy, contented people.
It is needless to eulogize on the life and character of Mr. Baskin. Day by day, year by year, he lived among us, known and read by all. Such a life speaks for itself.
His was a positive, definite character, standing firmly and unwaveringly for what he considered was right in business, church and society.
As a churchman and citizen, his place will be hard to fill. Volumes may be written of his unselfish devotion to the best interests in each.
In the business world, he will long be remembered among the most honest and most successful. Following no short cuts to wealth, he accumulated wealth and was ever "the poor man's friend."
Yet above all these, there comes to us, in memory of Mr. Baskin a greater achievement which marks him a success in life - as a father in his home.
He leaves eight sons to bear his honored name. Some in the maturity of life, are filling the places of trust as their father before them. Others, yet in the very bloom of young manhood, give the promise if all that is best in Christian citizenship. And the little lads, still in the home nursery, will in time develop favorably and the influence of their noble father's memory - a memory kept sacredly alive before them by the love of the sweet mother who for twenty years has been doing her part to develop the high standards of this Christian home.
