W. H. TRIGGS, PIONEER DIED WEDNESDAY NIGHT
W. H. Triggs, 89, pioneer cotton merchant and business man, died at 11:45 p. m. at his home in Cameron. He had been ill for three weeks from a heart ailment.
Mr. Triggs was born in Plymouth, England, near Kingston on April 9, 1856. He came to the United States in 1874. He settled at Rockdale and later moved to Round Rock in Williamson county and in his long business career he had engaged in the mercantile business and wholesale grocery. In 1899, he moved to Cameron with his family and engaged in business. His interests were in the mercantile filled, investment and farming. He had been a cotton merchant for more than a quarter century and at the time of his death was so engaged, maintaining offices in the city and devoted his time to the business in which he was a widely known factor.
In 1935, Mr. Triggs retired from active operation of the cotton firm W. H. Triggs & Sons, leaving the details to his sons, W. O. Triggs, A. J. Triggs and C. E. Triggs. Although he had been as active as theretofore for 10 years, he continued an active interest in business.
Mr. Triggs had accumulated considerable farm lands and business property in Cameron and Milam county.
Mr. Triggs was married to Miss Elizabeth Albright of Georgetown on February 28, 1881. He died on his wedding anniversary. Mrs. Triggs who died in Cameron, October 12, 1928, at the family residence, was the daughter of a pioneer Professor of German language in Southwestern University of Georgetown.
After their marriage they made their home in Round Rock where their family of children were born. The Triggs home in Cameron is an imposing two story mansion type on East 23rd Street across from the Campus of Yoe High School. Jere Mr. Triggs had made his home since the death of Mrs. Triggs with his daughter, Mrs. Howard Baskin who devoted her time to his care and comforts in his declining years.
Mr. Triggs was a member of the Church of England while he resided in the British Isles but united with the Methodist church when he came to America and had served as a member of the Board of Stewards for 60 years in the various Methodist churches in which he had membership and had been a member of the Board of the Cameron church for almost a half century. He was a prime spirit in the progress of the church and lent his support to the institutions of Methodism in Texas.
Surviving are four sons, R. A. Triggs of Houston; W. O. Triggs of Cameron; A. J. Triggs of Dallas and C. E. Triggs of Cameron; Mrs. Howard Baskin of Cameron, the only daughter of the family; and one foster daughter, Mrs. Dan Hanna of Houston survive. One brother, Ernest Triggs of Kingston, England. Eight grandchildren, five great grandchildren survive.
Active pallbearers are his grandsons, R. A. Triggs, Jr., George William Triggs, Montague Triggs, Billie Triggs, A. J. Triggs, William Howard Baskin, Macon Banner and Dan Hanna.
Honorary pallbearers are to be chosen from close friends of the family.
Funeral services will be held at 3 p. m. Friday, March 2, 1945 at First Methodist Church with Rev. K. R. Isbell, pastor, conducting the services. The body will lie in state at the family residence at 303 East 23rd street until the funeral hour. Interment will be made in Oak Hill Cemetery with the Green Funeral Home directing arrangements.
