Officer Gerald Walker was a 17-year law enforcement veteran of the Garland Police Department, and the first Garland Police Officer to die in the line of duty. Officer Walker was assigned to the Patrol Division, and was conducting a traffic stop on the night of November 15, 1989 on Lexington Drive and Saturn Road. The driver of the stopped vehicle shot and killed Officer Walker. The man responsible for Officer Walker's death was arrested a short time later.

Officer Walker was survived by his wife and two children.

Daniel Joe Hittle was the person who killed Officer Walker. Hittle was tried and found guilty of first degree murder for the death of Officer Walker. The jury sentenced him to death. He was executed by lethal injection at the Texas State Prison in Huntsville, Texas on the 6th of December 2000.
