Robert M. Stephenson was the son of Isaac Newton Stephenson and Lucy Stephenson. His middle name was Morris, later changed to Marion. He and Delilah Mapes were married on February 18, 1878 in Tarrant County, Texas. They lived in Hall County, Texas and later Hale County, Texas before settling in Lipscomb County, Texas in 1901, near the town of Darrouzett, in the panhandle section of the state. That trip was made in three covered wagons. He bought a new Dodge car in 1913 and switched from horse and buggy to automobile at that time. They were engaged in farming and ranching and endured many hardships including hostile indians, extremely cold winters, crop failures, prairie fires, dust bowl years and depression years. Despite everything the family maintained an abiding love of God and country. They were members of the Methodist Church.
