JOHN SUMMER BATTE DROWNED SUNDAY

On last Sunday morning occurred one of the saddest tragedies in the history of Milam county, when the whispered words went round: "Dick Batte is drowned, and his body's at the bottom of Wilson's Lake." Friends talked with him that morning and he was the same genial "Dick" as always and how little did any one think that is a few hours his spirit would be in eternity.
Mr. Dick Batte was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Lee Batte and was born Oct. 12, 1886, was educated in Cameron High School and in 1902 entered St. Edwards College in Austin. He was converted and joined the Methodist Church at the age of twenty-one. This was under the preaching of Evangelist George Stuart. On August 18, 1909 he was married to Miss Dorcus Spiller and three bright happy children blessed their union. Mr. Batte was good and kind to all who were under him. This was markedly shown by the number of Mexicans and colored people who attended his funeral. He was out doing an act of mercy, rescuing cattle from a swollen stream, when he was taken. Loving hands and willing hearts were extended to rescue him, he could not swim, but all efforts failed and he went down. His body was found after a search of five hours, and was tenderly laid to rest Monday afternoon in Oak Hill cemetery, surrounded by a large concourse of sorrowing relatives and friends. The entire community goes out in loving sympathy to the entire stricken family, the heart-broken wife and dear little children, and thanks be to God, that she has that faith and comfort from above without which despair would be inevitable.
"One more to welcome us
When we shall cross the intervening space
Between this land and that one over there;
One more to make the strange
Beyond seem fair."
