Sgt. Hughes lost his life with the 9th. Infantry Division in Germany during the year 1944. He was awarded the Silver Star for action in combat while advancing against strongly defended enemy positions, the forward elements of the Infantry were subjected to heavy enemy rifle and machine gun and motar fire. Seeing his platoon leader and several squad leaders fall seriously wounded, Sgt. Hughes immediately assumed command of the assult platoon and exposing himself to the intense enemy fire, reorganized the men, Sgt. Hughes' aggressive leadership, complete disregard for personal safety, and courageous actions resulted in a successful withdrawal and were a credit to himself and to the Armed Forces of the United States.
The Silver Star is one of the highest awards that can be made by armed forces. To possess it is evidence of heroic ation seldom attained in combat areas.
Sgt. Hughes is survived by his grandmother, Mrs. H. G. Hughes of Dallas, his mother, Mrs. Marvel Hughes of Cameron, his father, W. H. Hughes, Sr. and one brother, Harry Hughes both of Dallas.
