STINNETT - A ruling of accidental death was made Tuesday in the death of a Stinnett man who was found dead shortly after noon Tuesday lying beside his pickup on a dirt road about eight miles northeast of here.

William David "Bill" Campbell, 41, a lifetime area resident, was pronounced dead at the scene by Hutchinson County Justice of the Peace Buck Christian.

Campbell kept a heard of stocker calves near the site where his body was found. He had borrowed a 16-gauge shotgun earlier in the day, saying that he had seen several skunks and coyotes on his land and wanted to shoot some of them.

Christian said he believes Campbell was carrying the shotgun in the back of his pickup when he saw one of the animals and got out of the pickup to shoot it.

When the body was found, the automatic shotgun was lying in the back of the pickup with the barrel resting on the sideboard, Christian said. The spent shell was still in the gun, which was set for single fire.

Campbell had been struck once in the left side of the chest.

His body was found by Lewis Williams of Stinnett, who was driving past on the road.

Campbell was a member of the First Baptist Church of Stinnett, the Plemons Masonic Lodge, Khiva Temple of Amarillo and the Elks Lodge of Borger.

Funeral services are pending with Minton Mortuary.

Survivors include his wife, Jackie, of the home; one daughter, Glenna Karr of Clarendon; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. John H. Campbell of Spearman; one brother, John H. Campbell, Jr., of Spearman; one sister; Mrs. Medlin Patterson of Spearman.
