AMARILLO - Funeral services for J.D. Norton, 77, of Amarillo will be at 11 a.m. Friday in Blackburn Memorial Chapel with Mrs. Hugo A Riemer Jr., officiating.

Mr. Norton died Tuesday in Amarillo.

He was a retired oil field pumper, working in the oil fields in Dial for 23 years. He was a member of the Montrose Bible Baptist Church.

He married Velma Marr in 1932 in Portales, N.M. The couple moved to Dial in 1945. They later moved to Montrose, Colo., where they lived for 8 years. They lived in Amarillo for 12 1/2 years.

Survivors include his wife of the home; two daughters, Glenna Turner of Plano; and Retha Jones of Lubbock; two sons, Kenneth Norton of Newett, Colo.; and Jimmy Norton of Dallas; a sister, Nila Dick of Lufkin; two brothers, W.A. Norton of Clovis, N.M., and B.C. Norton of Seminole; eight grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Cemetery by Blackburn-Shaw Funeral Directors.

LUBBOCK - Velma Norton, 83, a former resident of Hutchinson County, died Sunday, April 4, in Lubbock Hospitality House.

Services were at 10 a.m. at Wayne Avenue Baptist Church with the Rev. Jesse Gillham, pastor, officiating. Burial will be at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday in Sunset Memorial Park in Stinnett under the direction of Sanders Funeral Home.

A longtime Hutchinson County resident, Mrs. Norton was born March 17, 1916, in Palestine. The family resided in the Dial area for many years before moving to Stinnett in the 1950s.

Mrs. Norton moved to Lubbock in 1989. She attended high school in Portales, N.M.

She married J.D. Norton on March 25, 1932, in Portales, N.M. She was a postmaster for in Dial from 1956 to 1970. She was a member of Wayne Avenue Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, J.D., on May 16, 1989.

Survivors include two sons, Kenneth Wade Norton of Castro Valley, Calif., and Jimmy Dean Norton of Amarillo; two daughters, Glenna Joyce Turner of Plano and Retha Ellen Williams of Lubbock; one sister, Edith Hoff of Spearman, eight grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

Memorial may be made to the Wayne Avenue Baptist Church Memorial Fund.
