STINNETT - C.J. (Jack) Oates, 86, of 1100 Williams, died at 3:35 a.m. Tuesday in North Plains Hospital.

A retired Independent oil producer, he was a native of Eastland, Texas and a Stinnett resident for 51 years.

He was a veteran of World War I and a member of St. Ann's Catholic Church in Stinnett. He was also a pioneer of the development of the Panhandle Oil Field and past president of the Panhandle Producers and Royalties Association. He donated the land for the St. Ann's Catholic Church in Stinnett and the land for part of Sunset Memorial Cemetery in Stinnett.

He is survived by his wife, Ann; a son, John Oates, of Austin; a daughter, Mrs. Martha Schaub of Philadelphia, Penn.; a foster-son, Tom W. Harrison of Shamrock; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Services are pending with Ed Brown & Sons Funeral Directors.
