Susan Catherine Skinner was first of seven children born to John Skinner and Elizabeth E. (Johnson) Skinner. Her father was previously married to Susannah (Albritton) Skinner. Before Susannah's death in 1844, they had three children, who would have been the half-siblings to Susan Catherine (Skinner) Mayfield.
Susan Catherine Skinner married John William Mayfield about 1876, according to the 1880 census where they appear together in Precinct 3, Lamar County, Texas. They had four known children together: John William Mayfield Jr., Sophronia Jennie Mayfield, George Wesley Mayfield, and Sallie Ella Mayfield.
