*Obituary

TAYLOR, TEVIS BENNETT, Died on March 5, 2006 of complications from Alzheimer's disease. She is survived by her three children; Shelby Smith, Kit Berkowitz, Paul Taylor, and their spouses, her sister Tish Woodruff, seven grand children, four nieces and nephews and three great nieces and nephews. She was married for 35 loving years to her husband James B. Taylor who died in December 1982. Tevis was born in Paris, Texas on July 26th, 1917. At the age of ten she moved to Dallas where she graduated from Highland Park High School. After graduating from SMU with a degree in journalism, her first career was serving in the U.S. Navy during World War II where she reached the rank of Lt. Commander. She served as one of the first woman paymasters for the WAVES and part of the First Officer's class at Harvard. Home after the war, Tevis went to work in 1950 for an advertising agency where she met and married her boss. At her suggestion, they bought the ad agency and started Jack Taylor and Associates. Tevis was very much a pioneering woman and a trailblazer. Among her many accomplishments was becoming the first female in Texas to receive the coveted Certified Commercial Investment Member (CCIM) designation in the State of Texas. Tevis worked for fifteen years as a real estate broker for Ebby Halliday and was recognized as the top commercial broker for ten of those years. In 1990 she co-founded Paul Taylor Homes with her son. Recently she was asked what important advice she would give a 20 yr old and her answer was "Reach for the stars and never give up!" But what all of her family will remember most about Tevis is that she never quit giving. A home-going celebration in Tevis's honor will be held at King of Glory Lutheran Church at 6411 LBJ Freeway in Dallas, Texas at 11:00 A.M. on March 21st, 2006 with a reception to follow at the church. In lieu of flowers, donations in Tevis's honor can be made to the Alzheimer's Association; http://www.alz.org/ and Meals on Wheels; http://www.mowaa.org/index.asp
