LaRona Joy Holcomb Maxwell, 70, died Wednesday, July 8, 1998 at Baptist St. Anthony's Hospice in Amarillo.

Services celebrating the life of LaRona Maxwell will be held Friday at 2 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church in Borger with Dr. David Jones officiating and Rev. Ken Sheppard, pastor of the Faith Covenant Church, assisting. Interment will follow at Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery. The Borger Chamber of Commerce Ambassadors will be acting as Casket Bearers. Honorary Casket Bearers include all former contestants of the Miss Borger Pageant, District 2T-1 Lions Queen Contest, and Miss Lake Meredith Scholarship Pageant.

LaRona was a native of Hutchinson County and a life-long resident of Borger, where she was a member of the First United Methodist Church and Kum Dubl Sunday School Class. She was an active civic leader and community volunteer, giving hundreds of hours each year promoting community and personal growth and development with the Borger Chamber of Commerce Ambassadors, Borger Noon Lions, Borger Evening Lions, Miss Texas Scholarship Organization, and the Miss Lake Meredith Scholarship Program.

LaRona served as the Director of the Women's Division of the Borger Chamber of Commerce in 1989. She was selected as Beta Sigma Phi "Lady of the Year" in 1993 and she was previously named an "Unsung Hero" by the Texas Plains Girl Scout Council. Most recently, LaRona was inducted into the Miss Texas Scholarship Organization Hall of Honor.

Survivors include her husband of 46 years, H. Quinton Maxwell; three children, Joy Wood and her husband, Rodney, of Borger, Jill Anderson and her husband, Kent, of Kenai, Alaska, and Jason Maxwell and his wife, Peggy, of New Braunfels; three grandchildren, Breean Lair of Laguna Park, Savannah Wood of Borger, and Bailey Maxwell of New Braunfels; one sister, Thelma Demings of Bayard, New Mexico; two nephews, George R. Demings of Bayard, New Mexico and Charles S. Demings of El Paso; one uncle, Horace Sandlin of Lubbock; one aunt, Katheryn Iola Sanders of California and numerous cousins.

The family will receive friends Thursday from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at Brown's Chapel of the Fountains. Memorials may be made to the Stained Glass Fund at the First United Methodist Church of Borger or your favorite charity. Brown Funeral Directors are in charge of all arrangements.
