LEVELLAND - Services for Stella G. Varley, 85, of Arlington, Va., will be at 3 p.m. Saturday in Geo. C. Price Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Jesse Hodge, pastor of First United Methodist Church in Levelland, officiating.
Burial will follow in the City of Levelland Cemetery.
She died Sunday, Sept. 4, 2000, in an Arlington hospital.
She was born on March 12, 1915, in Paradise. She moved to Levelland in 1927. She attended Levelland schools where she excelled in academics and was the district champion of women's singles tennis.
She graduated from Levelland High School in 1932. She attended Texas Tech College where she won many tennis awards. She graduated in 1936 with a bachelor's degree in home economics. She taught school until she married Wallace Varley in 1940 in Lubbock. He preceded her in death in 1970. She and her husband moved to Arlington in 1942.
She was employed by the Department of Agriculture and worked in the commodity exchange authority where she was administrator of the ticker room. She was commended for her sustained outstanding performance. She worked until 1970. She then worked for Moffett, Larson and Johnson Telecommunication Engineers where she was a statistician. She kept up with the latest radio and television developments. She enjoyed gardening, trading on the stock market, ballroom dancing and watching the Washington Redskins. She was a member of the Cherry Dale United Methodist Church in Arlington.
